movies in other languages

October 18, 2010

I took French in high school but I wasn’t trying very hard.

I know enough to order food and find my way around an airport but that’s about it.

Recently I have found myself watching more and more foreign films.  A lot of them Japanese animation that has some good subtitles but really I enjoy listening to the dialogue without worrying about what they are saying.

Let the Right One In doesn’t even need to be translated.  The acting is so good it works as a silent film.  Which is great because I can’t make heads or tails of Swedish.

But tonight it’s Alphaville from Jean-Luc Godard.  It’s fun to watch a French film and pick up bits and pieces of the language.

I think I need to watch it a few more times.  And then let it run while I sleep.

Maybe I’ll pick up more of the language in my sleep.
