muffin vs cupcake

February 10, 2011

Is the only difference between a muffin and a cupcake that a cupcake has frosting?

Winnie says that muffins are quick-bread while cupcakes are mini-cakes.  One of her chef friends said it was baking powder vs baking soda.  Considering the recipes that I’ve been using recently I think it really does come down to the frosting.

It’s the frosting, right?

  1. Muffins seem more filling and cupcakes are lighter.

That was something else I had heard. The issue of density. Which I think has to do with the idea that originally cupcakes used butter and sugar creamed together and muffins were more oil or melted butter mixed with sugar, flour etc.
